In the last issue, our nameless detective received a batch of letters between Myerson and Laura that led them eventually meeting and ending up where we are today. Now, the detective has tracked down who sent him the letters and it's... Frank Miller???
Yes. That Frank Miller. He even greets the detective at the door dressed up in the Rorschach get-up, but we see his face in flashbacks as he explains his story.
Years and years ago Frank met Myerson through a comic book writer Otto Binder (co-creator of Supergirl). In our reality, Otto Binder was an actual believer of the ancient alien theory. Here, he takes things further, does some work with NASA, and believes he can hear aliens using a tape recorder that he has. Believing that UFO's were linked to the dead, caring for souls as they ascended, he was trying to communicate with his dead daughter. He would ask the machine a question, sending up a signal, and a static noise would come back. He thought these were the "spirit men" talking back to him.
So Frank and Myerson met years ago at Otto's house, and they did their version of a seance. Of course, it was all just static, but Otto was sure they were talking to their loved ones. Frank was just happy to be in the same room as Myerson, as Myerson was a comic book hero to him. Frank was a young man and this was just before Myerson went into hiding.
The two wouldn't meet until recently when Myerson, dressed as Rorschach, showed up at his door with Laura. He explained that before Otto had passed, he sent him the tape that they used that day. And Myerson listened to it over and over again, throughout the years, and then as an old man, he finally heard something. "The Wil is the Mask". He thought he was being told to put on the Rorschach mask because the squids are coming back. And then he comes up with this crazy theory that the squids from 1985 couldn't be stopped by Manhattan because they were too powerful, but he did the only thing he could do to help: he went through time and space sent that message to the tape recorder.
Before they left, they gave Miller the letters and recording. After the assassination attempt, Miller sent the letters. But then he started listening too... and heard something else.
Bits and Pieces
Man, Myerson reeeeeeally lost his mind! On my first read of this issue, I was confused as heck and felt a bit drowsy from boredom. But it got way better on the second read as I now knew what the heck was going on. It's one of those ones where King wants you to be like "whaaaaaat?" for really no reason at all. But I continue to be impressed by this book as much as its existence and point befuddles me, and the more it goes on the more I'm hopeful that by the end it'll be an excellent piece of work.
