Justice League #59 Review
Getting Back To Naomi
It's not only a brave new world for DC Comics with their Infinite Frontier era of comics, but it's also a brave new world for Justice League as Brian Michael Bendis takes over the book and while I've had my problems with the way that he writes DC characters and at times seems like he doesn't really know the characters, I'm going to go into this with no baggage and just look for a comic that I can hopefully get behind because who doesn't want to love the Justice League? Let's jump into this issue and check it out.
After the events of Death Metal, we're just getting thrown into the new status quo of the Justice League, where our heroes don't have a member drive or take a vote to see who should be on the team, no, instead we just have our team ready to go here in the form of Superman, Batman, Hawkgirl, Aquaman, The Flash, Green Arrow, and Black Canary, but from all the news we've seen and the covers that have been released, we know that the team is getting extra members as we continue in the form of Hippolyta and Black Adam and as for the latter, we start to see the seeds of that recruitment in the works here. That's not all though because with Black Adam working with the League to fight an extra-dimensional, horned, heavy-weight named Brutus, our team discovers that this being is from the same world as Naomi McDuffie..... so it seems that Bendis while in the long run might tell interesting Justice League stories, is going to be coming out of the gate here and trying to flesh out his own character more than anything else.
At least for our first arc, this seems like a vehicle to get Naomi on the team and try to make people remember the characters since her initial six-issue mini ended so long ago, not to mention that it didn't do much to really define the character. On top of this, we have a Justice League Dark backup that starts with what we saw in Future State, with Merlin coming back to Earth and causing a hubbub. Even though the initial narration to this story was a bit overly long and tedious, the story started coming along once Zatanna and Constantine were brought into the mix.
All in all, I enjoyed the art in both stories in this issue and look forward to them as they go along, especially Justice League Dark and while like I said I look forward to seeing where we'll go in Justice League, I don't have the greatest faith in it, I just need to know what we'll be getting as we go along. For the first issue, though this wasn't terrible, I just wish that Barry Allan didn't have red hair like Wally West, that Green Arrow's dialog didn't seem so forced to try and get some kind of character traits into the book, and that I knew for certain that Brian Michael Bendis knows that Hawkgirl isn't Thanagarian. Like the majority of the books that BMB puts out, especially when there's a large roster of characters, they all tend to have the same kind of voice and you get that here, not to mention that while our heroes are talking nonstop..... they don't really feel like they have anything to say. That's not the case though in the JLD backup beyond the initial Merlin narration, where he wants to describe every step he takes to the point where it becomes tedious as hell but luckily this style of writing doesn't continue for very long and ultimately we get the start of what seems like a really interesting story and dilemma for our JLD team to face.
Bits and Pieces:
While the first issue of Brian Michael Bendis' run on Justice League comes off a bit forced at times, with dialog that doesn't feel like anyone in particular, there's still something that doesn't completely throw me off here, and ultimately, I'm still on board simply because I like the idea of the team he's putting together here. I just hope that this title isn't BMB's personal vehicle just to flesh out his owned characters. Beyond that though, the Justice League Dark backup is solid and what I'm really looking forward to as this book goes on.
